Description/background of Assignment:Guyana possesses significant mineral resources, with gold mining serving as a critical contributor to the national economy. Both large-scale and artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) operations play vital roles, particularly in supporting hinterland livelihoods. However, the ASGM sector, which accounts for nearly 70% of annual gold production, faces persistent challenges, including reliance on mercury, environmental degradation, and limited formal oversight. Recognizing the need for sustainable management, the Government of Guyana, in collaboration with the UNDP and GEF, is implementing the "Strengthening the enabling framework for biodiversity mainstreaming and mercury reduction in small-scale gold mining operations" (MBIM Project).
